Investigation of F1’s Red Bull Boss Creating Divide in Sport

Christian Horner heads the Red Bull Formula F1 team. After a successful 2023 season, a female employee alleged Horner engaged in inappropriate conduct of a controlling nature. The precise details of the allegations are not public. The company said it launched an independent investigation after learning of the allegations. Again, Red Bull did not provide any additional information. Horner "completely" denied the allegations to the press. Red Bull has now closed the investigation and dismissed the allegations of misconduct against Horner. The company asserted it was confident the investigation was "fair, rigorous, and impartial." Then, someone emailed a file with evidence against Horner to nearly 200 F1 people. Red Bull has suspended the employee who made the allegations.

Although Red Bull seemingly would like to move on, there continues to be fallout from the investigation and how Red Bull handled it. Seven-time world F1 champion Lewis Hamilton, who drives for another team, asserted the investigation reflected a critical moment for the sport. He said, "We always have to do more to try to make the sport and environment people work in feel safe and inclusive. Any allegations have to be taken very seriously." Formula 1 and its governing body indicated they want Red Bull to make their process and conclusion transparent. Ford, a Red Bull partner, allegedly expressed frustration with how Red Bull handled the process. Other teams have asked that the findings be made public. Red Bull and Horner continue to keep the details of the investigation under wraps, including the name of the person who conducted the investigation. While Horner demands the media stop speculating and move on, the allegations continue to hover over F1's current season.
