Former Nebraska Basketball Player Suing Former Coach For “Grooming”

Ashley Scoggin played basketball at the University of Nebraska from 2020 until 2022. Scoggin has filed a lawsuit accusing former Nebraska associate head coach Chuck Love of grooming her for a sexual relationship. She says the head coach and athletic director did not maintain appropriate boundaries between players and the coaching staff.

Love purportedly met with Scoggins for individual practice sessions, and he made "implied promises" to support her career. He allegedly invited her for drinks and messaged her late at night. When Scoggins accepted one of his invitations, she alleges he kissed her. Scoggins states she and Love then began a sexual relationship. He summoned her to have sex in his hotel room during road games. She asserts that she feared retaliation if she reported Love, and he cultivated the perception that he could "make her or break her" on the team. She believes she received less playing time after refusing to join a group sex session with Love and another man. Team members recorded Scoggins in Love's room. The head coach saw the video, but Scoggins alleges the head coach did not protect her confidentiality or look at the abuse of power in the situation. The coach suspended Scoggins initially and then removed her from the team. At no point did someone inform her of her rights under Title IX, Scoggins states, nor is she aware of any investigation of the situation. Love resigned at the end of the school year.

Scoggin’s attorney told The Athletic, “A coach in charge should not have sex with the student he is in charge of. A Division I head coach should not have to be told that this kind of relationship is an abuse of power.” The University of Nebraska said it disputes the allegations and plans to “vigorously defend this matter.”
